Tega Cay City Council Censures Member Over Kyle Rittenhouse Social Media Comment

Tega Cay, S.C. — In a unanimous decision Monday, the Tega Cay City Council formally censured Council Member Scott Shirley over a contentious social media post referencing Kyle Rittenhouse.

The Controversial Post

Shirley’s post came in response to an incident at a 7-Eleven convenience store in nearby Fort Mill. In a Tega Cay City Council comment, Shirley wrote, Rittenhouse a job for Kyle Rittenhouse.”
Rittenhouse gained national attention after being acquitted in 2021 of charges stemming from the shooting deaths of two people and the injury of another during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 2020.

The reference quickly drew criticism from local residents and community leaders, who called it inflammatory and inappropriate.

Community Reaction at Council Meeting

During Monday’s city council meeting, several residents voiced their concerns over Shirley’s remarks.

Bringing up his name in connection with a minor crime is both reckless and provocative,” one resident stated during the public comment session.

Another resident added, “I’m outraged by your blatant, violent online rhetoric. You’ve publicly undermined our first responders.”

Council Votes to Censure

While the censure is a symbolic gesture that does not remove Shirley from office or limit his responsibilities, it represents the council’s official disapproval of his actions. The motion passed with full support from all members.

Councilmember Brian Carter emphasized the importance of accountability, even under free speech protections.

“Freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment, but that doesn’t shield anyone from the consequences of their words,” Carter said.

Shirley Responds

In his defense, Shirley claimed that his comment had been misunderstood.

“I was advocating for store owners to defend their rights—their livelihoods, their property,” Shirley said. I admit, I could’ve chosen my words more carefully — and in hindsight, I probably should have. At no point was I promoting or encouraging violence.

Nevertheless, the council moved forward with the censure vote, undeterred by his explanation.

What Happens Next?

Shirley remains on the council, with his current term running until 2026. No additional disciplinary actions or policy changes have been announced at this time.
